As is typical in my field, I have a sliding scale (see table below) for image licensing, depending on the intended distribution, media of presentation, and scope of the publishing project.

IMAGE TRANSFER
Digital files are the preferred medium for transfer and are ready for use in your prepress layout. Digital files can be sent to you on CD-Rom or via FTP. If necessary, 35mm color transparencies can be provided upon request for an additional fee.

SCHEDULES & TIMING
I can usually fulfill orders within one week. If you know now what your production schedule is, advance warning of deadlines is always preferred over last minute frantic requests (though I do try hard to fulfill those, too).

SENDING YOUR IMAGE REQUEST(s) TO ME
Image inquiries and requests should contain as much of the following as possible:

ASSET NUMBER: each image illustrated on this site has an asset number associated with it, such as 1998_10_01_06_15 for the sunset image at right.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION of the image, preferably the caption I put on it.

INTENDED USE: when and in what capacity (media, size of print run, etc.) you plan to use the image. Most importantly, the size at which you plan to print the image.

IMAGE LICENSING TERMS & FEES FOR EDITORIAL or COMMERCIAL USE
My standard image license covers non-exlusive North American single-media single-language one-time usage. Reprints and revised editions that retain the originally licensed image(s) are licensed at half price.

Worldwide, exclusive, multilingual, or multi-media usage rights can be negotiated upon request.

Full rights purchases (all copyrights to the image are transferred to you) are negotiated on an individual image basis.

Per-image fees are negotiable for larger projects (such as field guides and catalogs) where many related images are required.

In addition to image fees, I may request a copy of the publication once it is completed.

Rush orders (less than a one week turnaround from request to due date):
add 20% to image fees.

Images are available for licensing in the following categories:

low resolution (72 dpi)
WWW use (licenses granted on an annual basis)	- 300 x 200: $20 each website - 480 x 320: $30 each website - 750 x 500: $40 each website - 970 x 650: $50 each website - 1200 x 800: $75 each website
CD-Rom/other multimedia	- 300 x 200: $20 each title - 480 x 320: $30 each title - 750 x 500: $40 each title - 970 x 650: $50 each title - 1200 x 800: $75 each title
moderate resolution (suitable for use on newsprint)
	- quarter page* or less: $25 each usage - half page: $100 each usage - full page: $250 each usage * page sizes based on standard 12" x 22" news page
high resolution (up to 4000 dpi) suitable for glossy printed media
Books	- quarter page* or less: $50 - half page: $100 - full page: $200 - two page spread: $300 - cover art: $500 * page sizes based on typical 5" x 8" field book page
Magazines & Journals	- quarter page* or less: $100 - half page: $200 - full page: $250 - two page spread: $350 - title page or rear cover: $500 - cover art: $700 * page sizes based on 8.5" x 11" page
Posters, Billboards, other large scale use	- primary image: $400 - small image in collage: $200

PAYMENT
Payment is due at the time of image acceptance (not at time of publication), although there is a 15 day grace period (after which a small late fee is applied monthly on overdue accounts). Failure to pay constitutes illegal usage and is grounds for legal action as copyright infringement (including all the punitive damages that accompany such misusage).

BYLINE & GRATIS COPY
Images should be credited as " © Joseph Dougherty/ECOLOGY.ORG" at the site of image usage. In publications where credit is not listed, add 10% to image fees. A printer's proof or copy of the completed publication (if requested) is to be mailed to the address above when the project is complete.
